H-1B Visa Update Details

The Department of State has introduced a pilot program to resume domestic visa renewals for qualified H-1B nonimmigrant visa applicants. Participation in the program is voluntary. Here are the key points:

Program Duration:

The pilot program will accept applications from January 29, 2024, through April 1, 2024, or until all application slots are filled.

Application Process:

  1. Eligibility Assessment:
    • Use the online navigator tool to assess your qualifications for participation.
    • The pilot is initially limited to the renewal of visas issued in India and Canada.
    • Individuals who do not meet the requirements for participation in the pilot program, or those who choose not to participate in the pilot program, may continue to apply for visa renewal at a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas.
  2. Application Steps:
    • If eligible, follow the portal’s instructions to complete and submit the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (form DS-160).
    • Pay the required, non-refundable, non-transferrable Machine-Readable Visa (MRV) application processing fee of $205.00 online.
    • Follow the portal’s instructions to mail your passport and other required documents for processing.

Application Slots:

  • A maximum of 20,000 application slots will be available during the pilot program.
  • Slots are released weekly, with approximately 2,000 per week for applicants from U.S. Mission Canada (issued between January 1, 2020, and April 1, 2023) and U.S. Mission India (issued between February 1, 2021, and September 30, 2021).

Entry Period Dates:

  • Application slots will be released on the following dates: January 29, 2024, February 5, 2024, February 12, 2024, February 19, 2024, and February 26, 2024.

Application Period Closure:

  • Applicants can apply only during the specified dates, and slots are allocated on a first-received, first-processed basis.
  • The application period closes when all slots are filled or on April 1, 2024, whichever comes first.
